Emerging UMC: A Gathering.....

So, a while back I was told by a friend (love you Betsey) that works in the national headquarters of the United Methodist Church to join a blog called emergingumc. So, I got on, joined up, and started a discussion that grew into great relationships. And now, they have asked me to be a speaker at a new event coming up in October '07 to speak about Organic Gatherings and how we are living into a "missional/emerging" way of being Christian. (yeah I know they have not met me so they might not ask me to do it once they do...but hey for now, as far as I know, we are still on, ha ha ha ha) So, here is the information so far and as more comes in I will post it here on the blog... please keep this event in your prayers....Oh and Merry Christmas!
--------------------------------------------

The dates for emergingumc: a gathering are set: October 4-6, 2007 (Thursday evening to Saturday noon). The location will be Nashville, Tennessee. Registration will be limited. We're still working on finalizing all sorts of other details, including price. We'll have more news about that by mid-January.

emergingumc: a gathering will be:
  • eminently practical-- you will share and learn what's happening where you are and identify and celebrate many ways forward-- or downward, or backward, or sideways
  • deeply spiritual-- in worship, spiritual practices, and the disciplines of Christian conferencing lived from our postmodern context
  • institutionally challenging-- the "subtheme" of this gathering is "What we want the mainline church to know about the emerging missional church," and we're looking to publish the presentations you and others bring to make your voices heard
  • authentically missional-- not "here's ten ways to fix your church and get lots of people to come," but "here's how we're discovering and learning to respond to God's mission in the midst of the people and institutions where we are, and here are some questions we still have"
But above all, emergingumc: a gathering is your event-- an opportunity for you as United Methodists who are exploring and birthing the emerging missional church among us to
  • share what you're doing and learning,
  • build stronger networks across the connection, and
  • amplify your voices to strengthen and deepen the practices of the emerging missional church among United Methodists in particular and mainline denominations in the US in general
So, mark you calendars now!

And keep watching for more specifics in the weeks ahead...

halo popping a balloon from my birthday....

i took this video of halo popping a balloon from my birthday (sorry Alicia)...and man it cracked me up....he had so much for for the VERY short time that he had it....and before i took it away from him, heh.... but anyway here it is...and you can tell he loved it....

oh and the shift key is not working right now on my computer and that is the reason the only time you see capital letter is when i turn on the caps lock and then off again...and it is killing me so i will just go one for now...

-------------------
speaking of halo...we had his teeth cleaned and while he was under they took off his dewclaws i guess that is what they are called....well everything went fine until we got home and he ripped out the bandages...and then this morning i looked down and his right foot was swollen to 4 times its normal size and noticed that they put the bandage on his foot too tight...and then when we called the vet they said to just take off the bandage and continue to keep giving him his antibiotics and pain medicine...and guess what they never gave us pain medicine....so poor halo went without pin meds and a swollen foot all night last night...and that was after we went back to the vet three times to get a collar that would still fit him and be long enough for him to not reach back and rip out his own stitches...anyway he is doing much better now...even though he has that plastic collar around his neck that he hates...but the bandages are off, the swelling is gone, and he seems to be a much better puppy dog now...but he has to wear that collar for 7-14 days and then we take him back t get the stitches out...and still not sure how that is going to go with us leaving next Monday to go home for Christmas...anyway... he is much better and i must now go to bed for church tomorrow..... kutps....God bless yall...

here is a picture of halo looking at me through the book case before the bandages came off almost asking me to please let him rip them off....please daddy please.....

----------------

oh and on our way out the door to go to the Friday night OG Tiffany's new purse broke and so she had to give what was supposed to be a surprise Christmas gift early...i got her with my parents a seatbelt bag purse...and very cool...and yes momma and daddy he loved it...sorry that she broke her other one and i had to give it to her early....and then i turned on my tv and it looks like the blue cannon that makes the picture look so amazing ly clear and hd...is really messed up and i have no idea how it got to be that way.....aaarrrggggg....and there is no way that we have enough money to replace the t.v. so between my dog and t.v. and wife's purse all breaking in one evening life is still going well, and we had a great time tonight going to the nursing home with the Friday night og and then everyone came over and had Texas chili and played the wii...well the guys played the wii while the women went out to shop, heh.... and then we now have 3 wonderful people staying at our house from their ski trip...and i am very tired.....so it is off to bed and work tomorrow.....so yall have a great week and i hope to post something before Christmas...oh and did i mention that my laptop latch is broke so it will not open properly...it works ok but is not where it should be...so i will have to take that in to get fixed and they have to ship it out and then ship my laptop to my parents house for me to be able to use while i am there....oh well merry Christmas everyone and God bless ya....kutps

some Wii videos....

so the last Monday night OG I took over my Wii to Matt's house and my Wii went over well....so well that I wanted to show yall some videos of the games played....

as you can tell Alicia's form in boxing is amazing...

-----------------------------------------------

Christian's form and athletic abilities are out of this world.....
-----------------------------------------------

here Alicia was told by me that I wanted to see some trash talking, but in the end she took it out on me, heh heh heh.....
----------------------------------------------------

here Matt and Christian have a Wii tennis volley challenge...tons of fun.....

yall have a wonderful night take care and God bless ya KUTPs....

Court got a new car....

So Court got a new car...and guess what car he got? Yep a brand new Honda CR-V...yeah yeah I know the influence I have on him is crazy deep, heh heh...just kidding...he just knows how good of a car it is...anyway...so on of the cool things they put in the car...was when you press the sunglasses holder to open it has a "conservation mirror" on it that allows you to talk with the passengers in the back seat or look at a baby just by looking just a little above the rear view mirror...very cool, and it was so cool that we just had to take photos of it...so that is exactly what we did, heh... just thought yall might get a kick out of it..anyway yall take care, God bless, and KUTPs!!!

Tiffany blowing out her fire cake, heh...

Everyone that was not playing the Wii or the board game down stairs.

Court and others bowling with my Wii

And here is the video I took of Tiffany's Birthday party...the footage is horrible...but man you would really be surprised what 32 candles can do to a fire alarm!! ha ha Ha... oh man there are so many jokes here..but oh well, love you girl and I hope your party was great!

Lastly, here is a shot of the decor outside of our house when you are coming into the front door...well the angle is that of what a dog might see...but it still shows you what the front door looks like at least...

Well, life is going good, I will try to post on something that is going on in my life right now..but for now I must get back to work...take care and God bless yall! KUTPs!!!

Happy Birthday Tiffany!!!!!!!

Hey everyone today is my wonderful bride's 32nd birthday! So, I will probably be spending the day doing whatever she desires to do!!! It looks like we may be watching The Santa Clause 3 and eating P.F. Changs and Abuelos! (and she actually told me that she would be OK with NOT going to Chick-fil-A heh....) but other than that she has not said anything yet of what else she would like to do..so there might be a surprise in there too! Yall stop on by her blog and leave a comment...I might just go over there to her blog, hack it and leave a message for her telling everyone that it is her Birthday today!

Thank yall God bless...oh and if you live in the area and love Tiffany, then you are more that welcome to come over to our house 6:00 pm on Saturday and eat some cake and play lots of games to celebrate the life of Tiffany! (and bring over something to drink...I am worried that we might not have enough coke, etc... Thanks! (oh and after everyone gets here we will order pizza too!)

Yall take care and God bless yall!

Our Thanksgiving Dinner, the bitter cold night for the Wii, and the victory over it....

Well our Thanksgiving dinner went wonderful1 We did not have as many people as we would have liked to come over...but Sean is VERY welcome company and we had plenty of food for the three of us!

here is a video of the feast:

And of course there was much sleeping ging on afterwards...darn you Turkey and food making us tired...but as you can see Halo was the most tired of all of us....

(and yes that is Sean he is sleeping on)

And of course it is that time of te year for the winter leaves to hang on for dear life....

===============

But here comes the good part. I asked Sean if he would want to join me in waiting in live for a Nintendo Wii? His Uncle is a worker of a gmaing company and with a littl ebit of loving letus know there were only 6 Wii Nintendo machines a this store and that if we wanted one we better get there VERY early! And so @ 11:30 p.m. Thanksgiving night we decided to go by the store and see if anyone was lining up to get a Wii...if there were we would get out and wait with them if there were less than 6 people, and when we drove by no one was there...so we went back to my house plained a little Gears of War, watched (with Tiffany) one episode of Grey's Anatomy and then we were off to go look again... So this time it was 1:45 a.m. the morning of Black Friday and we got there to find 3 people in live ahead of us!!! So we go tout and waited...and waited and waited and waited...and then it just kept getting colder and colder...(26 degrees is what it got down to). Eventually around 3:30 am I had to sit down so I got in the car and went and got chairs for everyone that was standing with us. And so here is the video I took about 2 hours before the store opened @ 7:00 am: (note there were more people by this time that just the original 4.)

===================

And Yes Here is the De-thaw from the Wii Black Friday Victory! Special thanks to Sean who did not ever buy a Wii, but stood out there all night long in the freezing cold just to give me company..and listen to Podcast together! Here we are at our after party in the car:

==================

Well, I hope yall's Thanksgiving and Black Friday went well! We have been having a ton of fun with the Wii today and I am sure that the youth group and the Hollums family will be putting it to good use during the next few years...Tons O Fun....sure do love yall, thankful for yall, and God bless yall!....KUTPs!!!

The welcome visit from West Texas and our first frost/snow....

Here is the first frost/snow of the year...as you can see it was not much...but I am really praying for a really good snow this year! And man I have got to tell you that I am sick and tired of the weather forecasters around here talking about how bad it is! Man I love snow and I wish I could email them and chew them out.
Here is Shook (yes, that is the name he goes by...it is his last name), Amy beside him and Jason (her husband (beside her))...and of course Tiffany is beside Shook. You can also see Kelly on the far left..but Courtney got out of the picture some how (well there is a little of his lap showing there).
Not sure if you can see it....but we are all standing on the benches singing songs!!! Of course, most of the songs were about beer, but it was still tons of fun!!! To the tune of "Do a deer", Dough, the stuff that buys my beer, "Ray" the guy who pours my bear, "Me" the guy who drinks my beer, "fa" not a long way from my beer, "So" I'll drink another Beer, la la la la la la BEER!!!...etc... you get the point it was VERY funny and as you can imagine there were a few around us that "really" liked the song, heh heh....
And yes they let you carve and write stuff on their tables...and so Tiffany wrote this.... KUTPs!!! Miss yall (Shook, Jason, and Amy tell Namiqa, Jeff, and everyone else I love them too and am praying fo rthem!), and know that yall are in my prayers down there is the promise land!

The Simpson's Movie...

I saw the trailer for The Simpson's movie yesterday and man it was funny! Here is a link to the movie trailer:

thesimpsons.com

And there is another movie coming out soon that has an official teaser trailer out and for you Harry Potter fans this might make you a little more happy:

Order of the Phoenix

OK so a friend of mine Sean was a little down and out yesterday and so we kind of hung out together yesterday and while we were in Kroger we got a short movie of a very funny Christmas lawn decoration.

And right before Santa...we hit the EB Games store for Sean to return some games and we got to play the Nintendo Wii....now yes I know that it is a stupid name...but seriously, this was soooo much fun! Truly amazing...and watch how Sean controls the car in the racing game....you literally move the controller not a button on it...but you move the controller...Nintendo really has something here...I had so much fun playing it....anyway here is the video of that fun time too:

=============

Well, I know that some of you migt be interested in the Seattle trip I took, and so hopefully I can be able to put some of that one here soon...until then take care and KUTPs!!!! Love yall!

Craddock numero dos...

So I decided to finish the blog post of the Craddock seminar I went to…and then I will write up a few thoughts about the Revolution Conference. And I am typing this on the airplane traveling to Nanaw’s funeral toward Lubbock from Houston….(we just ate @ Pappadeaux’s…man that was good crab cakes!!! Any way her is the last Craddock thoughts….

OK, so here is a quote form Craddock when we was talking about preaching….

“If your ear is dead and you can not hear your friends preach, it is probably true that your mouth is dead as well”

-----------

The following are questions you should be asking yourself as you are preparing your sermons:

Am I helping the church members getting to talk? Are they moved by your preaching, so they need to express it in someway?

Why should I sit here and listen to this, when it may change my life?

------
he then told a story of a woman who came up to him after she heard him preach…and the conversation went something like this:

Craddock: Was this was your first time coming to church?
Woman: Yes?
Craddock: What did you think?,
Woman: Well it was scary!
Craddock: (trying to think of where in his sermon it was scary) Why was is scary? Woman: Because it seemed so important….and I don’t go to anything important.

What does that ay about sermons? Is your preaching something that brings to mind something so important that it reaches into the depths of people’s lives and affects them?

-----

Advice for preachers:

Ok you have been reading about Jehu the past two weeks and your excited about preaching about them….but there might be two or three who have not been spending their days and nights reading the same thing (insert sarcasm, ha ha ha)

So, don’t give them all you got at the first of the sermon, because most of them have not even shown up yet, heh heh….

If you do this then, “You will be wasting your fragrance on the dessert air.” Ha Ha Ha… even that phrase is poetic, heh.

-----

People have emotional forces at work in their lives all the time. It is a miracle that we communicate at all…with all these things going on in the heads of the listeners.

You say your preaching, but it is not written on blank slates….they are living their lives too! It is hard to listen…Jesus said it too, the Word of God, is spread out on the rocks, path, shallow soil, etc…

“I wanted to shot him…in a Christian way” heh.

If it is hard to listen, it is probably harder to speak

C.L. Franklin most influential black preacher to the preaching world used to say, “I give them the sermon… the process of preaching is giving the listeners the sermon”

(this reminded me of my past Bishop Alfred Noris in the Northwest Texas Conference sermon one year….. I remember he said the phrase, “People are precious”…over and over and over and over and over…people are precious, people are precious….people are precious… and by the end of the sermon…he did not even have to say it…the entire congregation was saying it for him….he gave them the sermon…and hopefully they took it with them.

The intent is that you give people a sermon that they not only keep…but take with them!!! It is not to be cute, or interesting… but selfish in nature!)

-----
“Nothing is as powerful as the power of recognition!”

Give people the chance to respond to the sermon…draw a drawing, write a poem, What is in your heart @ this moment in your heart before we leave get it out...and express it!

How can I preach in a certain way that people would like to write a poem, etc…

Then use those poems, stories, sentences in sermons…if don’t have any then quote a few that everyone would know.

Evocative power is key…

------

8 things that will help you make your preaching evocative:

1. It all starts with respecting your study hours…and keep doing them until they become a joy…and when study time and prayer time get confused…that is when you are @ a good place.
2. Love words, use words, and respect words. Take some of the words you use all the time, put them on the shelf, maybe in 10 years you can use them again with all new meanings. Enjoy hearing people talk…nothing is red neck…it is just a different use of words…and lots of words have great meanings.
3. Think through thoroughly the view of your listener. He assumes that everyone is interested in what he is talking about and is as excited about it as much as he is!
4. Try to build anticipation into all your ministry, including your sermons…are they excited about you coming? Anticipation in communicating, one part anticipates the other part…listeners like to think where you are going and be sitting on the porch before you get there! Prepare your closing sentence first and then you get to tell them where we are going! Tell us Tell us Tell us , but don’t tell us we want to figure it out! (Let them think they are going to that porch…and then go to the other one, heh)
5. Urge preachers to create a discussion not between you and the listeners, but between the text and the listeners! Stay in the scripture to really be a part of it...sense the complexity of it!
6. Always take care of your self by giving attribution where it needs to be.
7. the truth…especially what you have seen or heard yourself!!!
8. We must all attend to our own soul… in our own needs! We have to give our worst to God, because without the Holy Spirit we are just making speeches…it is God’s spirit that brings the word!
=============

Well, I hope yall enjoyed the wonderful wisdom of one of the best narrative preachers in the world… for some of you preachers out there…these are great words….and for those of yall who may need to speak in front of others!!! Let me know if any of yall found these thoughts helpful. Take care and God bless yall! KUTPs!

YouTube videos of Seattle Conference Trip...and....I promise more conference stuff soon....

Well, I promise that I have a ton of stuff on the Revolution conference I went to. It was a great time had by all, and I will get that to yall as soon as I can... In the mean time, I am uploading videos of the trip on YouTube right now (OK, it looks like they are all up...so go and check them out right now @ My YouTube Seattle Trip Playlist..and trying to figure out all the seminars and talks we heard so I can give it in some kind of format that will work....also...the second Craddock seminar will be coming soon too...so lot sot be looking forward to int he next couple of days....Oh and I have been playing Gears of War...and that is an amazing game...lots of cussing and blood...but still very awesome!

So in the middle time until I get this stuff up...you can go over to Markus' blog and read about his thoughts on the conference....

West Texas

Here are a few shots of West Texas...and the 3rd most important part of it...Cotton! This is a shot of a cotton field..and as you can see it just keeps on going into the flat land of West Texas! This is not the best example of a fruitful field...there were a few that were AMAZINGLY coated in little white bowls of fluff (and seeds, heh) But, my parents just stopped on the side of the road to let me get a few pictures of the sight!

Close up...and ready for harvest!

Here is a shot of the Cap Rock! This s the place that it goes from VERY flat to "normal" country. I liked the shot because it was very clear where it starts and stops.

And this is just the tip of one of the wings of the planes flying from Houston to Indy. I love that curved tip! Well, I will be fixing REAL TX Chili for tonight, because the Monday evening Organic Gathering will be coming over for a Chili cookoff! I rarely win these cook-offs, mainly because people around here have no idea what chili is, but oh well, and I am sure that Tiffany will enter a big bowl of New Mexico Green Chili...which is not TX chili either...it is just cut up NM green pepper chilies, heh heh.... but they do go good in regular chili. ha ha ha...... and some of you might be wondering... 3rd best thing in West Texas? Well that is easy 2nd best thing=Sun rises and sun sets (both are equally awesome!...and the best thing in West Texas?...................... the people! No greater people in the world than the hospitality, an character found in West Texans! no offense to those of you who read this blog and are not fro West Texas.....Yall are filled with hospitality and character too....but I am speaking in generalities here, heh..... (and yes I know this will get lots of comments...heh heh heh.... KUTPs!!! and know I love yall.....(some of yall I love anyway, ha ha ha ha ha)

A few pictures from the trip to the funeral

Here is one of my favorite pics from the funeral...it is from the plane and taken with a long exposure! Those lights are the green lights on the runway of the plane in Houston. I just thought it was very cool!
Here is the same airplane ride, but this time with the lights blinking under the wing of the plane....
Here is a big red ball just outside of Target in Lubbock, TX..... I loved the way the sun was hitting it and thought the contrast of light around the globe was cool. I was wondering why this was there. I can not remember if there was just this one, or multiple balls were around the parking lot...but it would be cool, if this was the center of the target from the bull's eye of the target logo.
And here is a shot of the shopping cart sing in the parking lot of Target..... I am not sure why I took this photo, but I like it...effective design work.

Nanaw is now with Jesus!!!!

Hey everyone:

I wanted to let you know that I just found out from my dad that my Nanaw (Grandmother) just passed away and join the church triumphant tonight! I just go t in to my house from driving from Louisville after flying from Seattle to Houston and then Houston to Louisville...and I am currently looking for flights out of here to go home to TX for the funeral....

When my Daddy told me I immediately smiled! I shed a few tears too, but smiled from my soul. Nanaw is with Jesus! Praise be to God and on ALL SAINTS DAY SUNDAY, TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, while I was on the phone with my mother-in-law telling her about my Nanaw...their dog Matelda jumped through their back window shattering it all over their living room and the vet does not know if Matelda will make it because of all the blood loss.

So...needless to say our phone is off the hook, but there is joy in in our missing! And hope is renewed each night and each day with each life and each death! And from a book I am reading let me share part of a poem from Maya Angelou:

And when great souls die,
After a period peace blooms,
Slowly and always
Irregularly. Spaces fill
With a kind of
Soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
To be the same, whisper to us,
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
Better. For they existed.

--from "When Great Trees Fall"

==================================

And now a little from William W. How (1864) (Hebrews 12:1):

For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
Who Thee by faith before the world confessed,
Thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might;
Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight;
Thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

For the Apostles’ glorious company,
Who bearing forth the Cross o’er land and sea,
Shook all the mighty world, we sing to Thee:
Alleluia, Alleluia!

For the Evangelists, by whose blest word,
Like fourfold streams, the garden of the Lord,
Is fair and fruitful, be Thy Name adored.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

For Martyrs, who with rapture kindled eye,
Saw the bright crown descending from the sky,
And seeing, grasped it, Thee we glorify.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

O blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
All are one in Thee, for all are Thine.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

O may Thy soldiers, faithful, true and bold,
Fight as the saints who nobly fought of old,
And win with them the victor’s crown of gold.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
Steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
And hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

The golden evening brightens in the west;
Soon, soon to faithful warriors comes their rest;
Sweet is the calm of paradise the blessed.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day;
The saints triumphant rise in bright array;
The King of glory passes on His way.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast,
Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
And singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost:
Alleluia, Alleluia!

=====================

And just for god measure to throw a little Charles Wesley (1762) in there too:

If death my friend and me divide,
Thou dost not, Lord, my sorrow chide,
Or frown my tears to see;
Restrained from passionate excess,
Thou bidst me mourn in calm distress
For them that rest in Thee.

I feel a strong immortal hope,
Which bears my mournful spirit up
Beneath its mountain load;
Redeemed from death, and grief, and pain,
I soon shall find my friend again
Within the arms of God.

Pass a few fleeting moments more
And death the blessing shall restore
Which death has snatched away;
For me Thou wilt the summons send,
And give me back my parted friend
In that eternal day.

I love you Jesus, take care of my Nanaw...she is yours and in your hands!

Welcome to Seattle's Pike Place Market.........

Well after a VERY crazy ride to the Market...man the public transit system is filled with lots of "interesting" people. We had a very nice driver, and a very needed crack user, and one lady in the back that was mad at them both...heh...tons of fun...so we go toff the bus, ran into a Rite Aid to buy umbrella's... so duh...it is freaking Seattle, heh.... and then we met some really good friends of mine @ the market right here at this place...where they are known for throwing fish....

Here is Juaniece enjoying a fish being thrown at her, heh heh... she so was sweet...we got there very late and they were about to close up...but she got them to throw one more fish so I could take a picture of it!!! She was so sweet and it was so good to see her and her husband Neil(sp?)!!! They really treated us wonderfully!...and even got our dinner that night! more on that later...but check out the flying fish above her head!!! Sorry it is blurry, but still very cool!Here is a Monk Fish...why do I have one of the ugliest fish in the world on my blog?...well, 1) because it is freaking ugly, 2) it had a sign next to it that said it was a Monk Fish, 3) Monk Fish liver is my favorite Sushi!!!

Our flight here (The Revoltion Conference) yesterday

Well, here are a few pics of the flight over here to Huston and then to Seattle!
Oxygen lamp anyone? heh heh.
All the brown is really beautiful changing color trees!
Loved it...can you tell? heh... I also took a movie of the airplane ride, but for some reason when I tried to transfer the video from my camera to my computer it corrupted the file...so no vblog this time around...sorry!

The trip here was tons of fun...except for all of the knee pains that those seats caused....but we made it and I had a great talk with a man originally from Cuba, that now lives in Florida with his wife and he was visiting his daughter in Seattle! It was some great talking about Revelation, the Roman Catholic Church, and organic church.....as you all could possibly imagine....it ROCKED!!!

So then we got into Seattle's airport....got our luggage, ran and put the luggage along with our computers and the rented GPS device!!! (that freaking think ROCKS!!!! Man I want one...but I could never bring myself to be able to afford it..oh well...it sure has helped us get around and tons of fun to play around with it......anyway.... we put that stuff in the car...and then left the car and our stuff in the car, ran to the public transit bus and went as fast as we could to downtown Seattle to the Pike Place Market...and the 1st Starbucks!!!! More on that in the next post....
